with it. And the hope that the digital will save it is not new any more. Problem is, it just didn’t happen, or at least it was far from satisfactory. Why did the big revolution not take place? One popular answer was that the screen was not providing an user experience as good as paper. The resolution was too low to enjoy fine drawings, clicks and scrolls aren’t as involving as page turning, you have to hold something in your hand to appreciate it … the list goes on. It seemed to have less production value and thus commercial appeal. <\/p>\n Then came along the tablet boom, headed by iPad. The resolution was good enough to be low-density print, touch-interactive screens, and you hold something in your hands: heavy enough to feel its presence, light enough for your wrists not to fall off. Ah, and the online digital distribution. The printing world, and comics along with it, shouted hooray. Marvel teamed up with Comixology<\/em> with its iPhone app fame, releasing its own shopping and reading app. Other publishers followed along or went into the digital shops. The participation grew, providing grounds for optimism.<\/p>\n However, tablets in themselves don’t save the comics market. They didn’t do so for newspapers or magazines so far, despite all the hype. Sure, the production value has increased. But then again, we’ve been enjoying comics with ridiculously low production quality – for example, coarsely printed cheap small prints. In any field, the demand for contents is exploding while the will to pay for its medium is decreasing. Although tablets provide better ways to make people pay for stuff, there is no reason to believe sales increase in the digital market will ever make up for the decrease in print market. <\/p>\n But as it is the case with any new platform, it will provide great opportunities. Not for the industry overall, but for the few specific cases that get it done right. That succeed in optimizing themselves for the platform, the taste of its users at that specific time. When the paywalled online comics libraries were booming in Korean in the early 00s, wuxia comics and erotic comics aimed at adults was the genres that found a solid readership willing to pay. On the other hand, the shonen genre which was the mainstream in the print world, was rapidly marginalized on that platform. <\/p>\n The same goes for tablets. It’s a media platform used by users with specific set of tastes. What counts is to provide comics that click with not the tablet machine, but with the users using it.
